My intention when I put brush to paper is to invite the viewer to feel the ambiance of my subject matter. I work primarily in water media harmonizing carefully rendered areas of a painting with loose washes to capture the essence of a subject. I enjoy painting a variety of subjects, from landscapes and portraits to still life. The common link in these subjects is that they have a quality about them that has peaked my interest. A characteristic that makes these subjects unique. This may present itself as an odd shadow created by the play of light on a flower, the hopeful mood of a cool morning sunrise or the subtle transitions in colour across the features of a friends face. These qualities I try to highlight by utilizing the unique properties and attributes found in watercolour.
I begin by carefully planning my paintings almost rehearsing in my mind the route I will take. This allows me to be more free with my paint application, enjoying the spontaneous nature of water media. I also enjoy incorporating new and sometimes experimental watercolour methods in my paintings. This helps put an aspect of playfulness in my approach to art creation resulting in a feeling of joy!
